A hidden early source of information on north-eastern Brazilian zoology Naturalis
Boeseman, M..
Attention is drawn to some hitherto overlooked paragraphs on the north-eastern Brazilian fauna hid- den in a historiographic account of Count Johan Maurits' govenorship (1637-1644), published by Caspar van Baerle (Barlaeus) in 1647, a year before the publication of Marcgrave & Piso's famous Historia naturalis Brasiliae and based on the same sources.

A Japanese portrait of Heinrich Bürger Naturalis
Uéno, M..
Recently I came across a portrait of Heinrich Bürger made when, as a secretary to Philipp Franz von Siebold, he visited Edo (now Tokyo) in 1826. This portrait is a rough sketch, and so far probably is the only portrait of him in existence. It was made by Watanabe-Kwazan (written also as Kwazan Watanabe after the western manner), an eminent artist, who, at that time, was also highly distinguished as a scholar of western thinking, a consequence of his Dutch learning. The present sketch was found in a collection of Watanabe's works owned by an old family, Kasuya by name, residing in the town of Kira in Aichi Prefecture. Watanabe's last place, Tabara, is located south of Kira beyond the Bay of Mikawa. Watanabe died there in 1841. Burger's biographic data...

Albertus Seba's „Locupletissimi rerum naturalium thesauri...." (1734-1765) and the „Planches de Seba" (1827-1831) Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B..
INTRODUCTION The present note is the result of an investigation into the correct date of publication of the third volume of A. Seba's great work "Locupletissimi rerum naturalium thesauri. ..". In my own studies on Crustacea I accepted the year 1761 as correct, following in this Engelmann (1846) and the title page of the copy of Seba's book that I consulted. Dr. M. Boeseman, ichthyologist of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, pointed out to me that in ichthyological literature the year of publication of this volume is practically always cited as 1758. Also Engel (1937) in his biography of Seba gave this later date. In trying to straighten this question out I obtained the most cordial help from Dr. Boeseman, Prof. Dr. H. Engel, former director of the...

Alexander von Humboldt and Coenraad Jacob Temminck Naturalis
Raat, A.J.P..
INTRODUCTION In the archives of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie in Leiden there is a map with three letters written by Alexander von Humboldt (17691859) to the first director of the Museum, Coenraad Jacob Temminck (1778-1858). The map, the hard cover of John Gould's "Synopsis of the birds of Australia" (April 1837), bears the handwritten caption "correspondentie von Humboldt" (correspondence von Humboldt). Besides the letters of von Humboldt, the map contains three concepts of letters written by C. J. Temminck to A. von Humboldt. These letters were probably not the sole contacts that von Humboldt and Temminck ever had, for as early as 1790 von Humboldt already visited the Temminck family in Amsterdam. It is likely that there have been more...

Bibliografische aantekeningen over Jac. P. Thijsse's Vogeljaar Naturalis

Bibliographical notes on de Folin & Bérillon's Malacological papers concerning "La Region Extrême S.-O. de la France" and related publications by de Folin and Barrois Naturalis
Gittenberger, E.; Kosten, A.P.W.M..
Between 1874 and 1877 the marquis L. de Folin and F. Bérillon published several papers on the non-marine mollusks of the southwesternmost part of France. In this series of papers, for obscure reasons published under three different headings, various new nominal molluscan taxa are introduced. Their correct citing and dating is important therefore. Because these data cannot be found in the literature, we considered it useful to summarize the results of our bibliographical investigations. As a by-product of our studies some notes are given concerning certain papers by De Folin alone and a contribution which is attributable to Barrois. De Folin & Bérillon (1874-1877) published their "Catalogue", "Etudes" and "Contributions" in two journals, which are not...

Biographische notities betreffende ornithologische verzamelaars in Suriname in het begin van de 19e eeuw : Mr. Charles François Mirandolle (1789-1841) Mr. Adriaan François Lammens (1767-1847) Naturalis
Haverschmidt, F..
Ornithologists have named many birds after their discoverers, collectors or others they wished to honour. However, it is sometimes not clear exactly whom the person commemorated is; sometimes there is merely a mention of Mr. X. without any initial, at other times no individual is mentioned at all. (O. E. Wynne, Biographical key — Names of birds of the world — to authors and those commemorated. 1969). MR. CHARLES FRANÇ OIS MIRANDOLLE In 1862 beschreef Hermann Schlegel in „Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle des Pays Bas — Revue méthodique et critique des collections déposées dans cet établissement" (hierna kortheidshalve „Revue méthodique" genoemd) een roofvogel uit Suriname onder de naam Astur mirandollei (thans Micrastur mirandollei (Schlegel)). Charles Darwin’s lost Cinereous Harrier found in the collection of the National Museum of Natural History Leiden Naturalis

During reorganisation of the Leiden bird collection a mounted harrier was found what seemed to be one of the still lost specimens collected by Darwin. After closer research it turned out it was indeed the last missing harrier of the Darwin collection.

Contributions to Zoology, the journal - diversity in research topics and changes over the last 27 years Naturalis
Vonk, R.; Nijman, V..
We provide a brief overview of the history of the journal Contributions to Zoology and analyse the papers published in the last 27 years by topic. Founded in 1848 as ‘Bijdragen tot de Dierkunde’, 160 years and 76 volumes later it is one of the oldest zoological journals that is still regularly printed. Over the last decades most papers dealt with invertebrates (60%), followed by vertebrates (23%), insects (10%) and non-taxonomic papers. Contributions to Zoology has seen a change from a largely alpha taxonomic journal to one that is truly general in scope. Systematic Biology and Comparative Morphology of both extant and extinct taxa nowadays make up about half of the papers published. Ethology as a research subject has been gradually phased out, and judged...

Frederik Petrus Koumans, 1905-1977, a biography and a tentative list of his biological papers Naturalis
Boeseman, M..
On Wednesday 27 April 1977, my predecessor as a curator of fishes at the Leiden Museum, Dr. F. P. Koumans, after a short illness, rather unexpectedly passed away at the age of 72. Considering his rôle as a staff member of the Museum and the importance of his contributions to science, the publication of a short biographical note and a list of his publications seems an obligation towards his former colleagues, if not a duty for me as his former pupil. Frederik Petrus Koumans was born on 21 January 1905 in the Hague, where he attended elementary and high school. After his high school examination in 1922, he studied biology at the nearby University of Leiden, where he obtained his masters degree in 1927, and his doctorate in 1931. There is no information...

Gustav Albert Stiasny Naturalis
Vervoort, W..
Gustav Albert Stiasny was born in Vienna (Austria) on December 10th, 1877. After he had attended the elementary and grammar schools there and having finished a one year course of lectures in commercial enterprise, Stiasny enlisted as a volunteer with the Austro-Hungarian army. A year later he left the army after he had obtained his commission, to take up an appointment with his father's commercial business. Young Stiasny, who was much interested in Natural History, soon left his father's affairs to give himself completely to the study of Zoology, Botany and Geology. For that purpose he attended lectures at the universities of Vienna and Jena. As about that time such celebrities as Hatschek, Grobben, Haeckel, et al., were lecturing there it is no wonder...

H. Milne Edwards's "Histoire Naturelle des Crustacés" (1834-1840) and its dates of publication Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B..
Introduction. — By far the most important and fundamental carcinological publication of the first half of the 19th century unquestionably is Henri Milne Edwards's (1834-1840) "Histoire naturelle des Crustacés", which treated all species of Crustacea known at that time in an exceedingly clear and comprehensive manner. The work was published in three volumes of text and one atlas. The dates of publication of it have never caused any difficulty. It was generally accepted that volume I was published in 1834, volume II in 1837, and volume III in 1840. These dates have never been challenged, and on closer examination indeed prove to be correct. About the date or dates of the atlas authors were vague and usually cited 1834-1840, or 1840, or they cited the atlas...

Hilbrand Boschma Naturalis
Klaauw, C.J. van der.
For anyone who, now or in the future, in the far future, will have to do something with Rhizocephala, their systematics, microscopic anatomy, host specialization etc., it will be impossible to avoid the name and the work of Boschma. It rather seems that he can almost confine himself to this author. Anyone who, now or in the future and in some respects a very far future, will have to do something with corals, Anthozoa as well as "Hydrocorallia", their systematics, ontogeny, normal and abnormal bud formation, their variability, their form in relation to the environment, their symbioses, their geography etc., will do injustice to himself and to science by not including Boschma's work in his studies. For such colleagues this sketch of Boschma's life has been...

In Memoriam E.D. van Oort 1876 - 1933 Naturalis
Bayer, Ch..
On September 21st last Professor Dr. E. D. van Oort died at Leiden rather suddenly. For a considerable time his health had, indeed, been indifferent; on frequent occasions he had been unwell for shorter or longer periods, and in the spring of this year he was even obliged to apply for a four months' leave of absence. When after the expiry of this period, apparently recovered, he resumed his work, be it only for a few hours daily, we fostered the hope to have him among us for many years to come. Fate, however, decided differently. On Thursday morning he came to the museum, feeling better than on the previous days; he received the visitors cheerfully, and left the building past noon. Three hours later death had overtaken him. Eduard Daniel van Oort was born...

In memorium Dr. Agatha Gijzen (1904-1995), eminent museum historian and zoo biologist Naturalis
Bruggen, A.C. van.
Dr Agatha Gijzen (Rotterdam *9 October 1904, Merksem/Belgium †19 February 1995) was a remarkable zoologist in more than one respect. Although her professional career, spanning more than three and a half decades, was largely spent as a staff zoologist in the service of the famous Antwerp/ Planckendael zoological gardens complex in Belgium (1947-1974), she had already made her name as a zoologist/historian by obtaining her Ph.D. degree in 1938 on an extensive first study of the history of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie in Leiden, the national museum of natural history of The Netherlands. She properly organized the archives of the museum for the very first time and her published doctoral thesis (unfortunately only available in Dutch; summary in...

John Ruskin as Zoologist Naturalis
Hammen, L. van der.
A study is made of John Ruskin's work in the field of zoology. It is demonstrated that Ruskin's early interest in zoology was connected with his study of ornament, whilst his later studies are connected with his Oxford teaching and his social work. Ruskin's interest in zoology concerned groups frequently represented in art (particularly birds and snakes). Of these groups he studied, in a fragmentary way, the artistic morphology, the life-habits, the particular position to art and literature, and the mythological signification. Besides that, his natural history teaching was focussed on the protection of animals and respect for nature.
